Nia Bowen - 200-hour YTT yoga teacher with a special interest in Accessible Yoga
It had long been an aspiration of mine to teach, having practiced yoga for almost 20 years and with my professional background in Medicine and Anatomy. Once COVID restrictions began to lift, I took the opportunity to complete in-person training at the Kerry Curson School of Yoga in Pembrokeshire (certified by Yoga Alliance Professionals). I have completed Yoga Alliance-certified teacher training in Yin yoga, pranayama (breathwork), and prenatal yoga, and I am a certified Cosmic Kids! children's yoga teacher.
Making yoga accessible
I am an Accessible Yoga School graduate and ambassador, and I believe that yoga is for every body. I strive to make my classes accessible, inclusive, and welcoming, and I offer adaptations and variations in all my classes. When you join us in class, I will encourage you to think of your practice as your practice - you are free to do as much or as little of the class as you want, without judgement or comparison. I hope my classes offer a safe, calm space for you to move mindfully, safely, and confidently. If you have any needs or preferences you'd like to discuss with me before joining a class, you are very welcome to get in touch via nia@boda.org.uk
Where I teach
I currently teach four weekly classes for beginners and improvers in Carmarthenshire at Peniel Community Hall, including a chair yoga class. I provide Yoga for Rugby sessions for several local rugby teams, run recurring series of Yin yoga, pregnancy yoga and toddler yoga classes, hold yoga sessions for nurseries, schools, and festivals with Ioga Boda Bach, and arrange bilingual collaborative yoga and mindfulness events in Carmarthenshire. I also teach on yoga courses, have taught yoga to children on tv programmes, and frequently speak at public and corporate events.
What I teach
I would describe my main classes for adults as 'slow flow', a gentle combination of Vinyasa (a sequenced physical practice lead by the breath), Yin (a quiet contemplative practice focused on the joints), and Hatha (a classic practice that involves breathwork and meditation). These styles are accessible for all levels of experience and ability, including beginners. I run a recurring six-week Yin yoga course for beginners; these classes are essentially open to all levels, but we also delve into the history of Yin yoga, explore holding familiar yoga poses for a longer length of time, and experiment with passive stretching. My classes are bilingual - the majority of direction is in English, but I'll be chatting and discussing our practice in Welsh too as it's my first language and I enjoy incorporating facets of Welsh culture into classes.
Joining our practice
Classes are booked online via https://boda.simplybook.it/v2/ - I encourage you to discuss your concerns with me before or at class - this is always done in strictest confidence. I don't offer manual assists during practice, I may only use tactile prompts if requested and after gaining your clear consent. Please let me know if you would prefer not to be offered physical adjustments. My aim is to support you in a trauma-informed way.
